| A growing number of
organisations are working together to protect seamounts,
cold-water corals and vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems. The
Deep Sea Conservation Coalition is calling on the United
Nations General Assembly to secure a moratorium on high
seas bottom trawling and protect these fragile and unique
pockets of life in the deep seas before they are destroyed
forever. Read our

Greenpeace
http://www.greenpeace.org
Greenpeace is a non-profit organization,
with a presence in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas,
Asia and the Pacific. Greenpeace speaks for 2.8 million
supporters worldwide, and encourages many millions more

focuses on the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet's
biodiversity and environment, exposing environmental criminals,
and challenging government and corporations when they fail
to live up to their mandate to safeguard our environment
and our future.
Ancient forests are in danger... deep under the ocean.
Biologists estimate that somewhere between 500,000 and 5,000,000 marine
species have yet to be discovered. But these very species are in serious
danger from the world's most destructive fishing practice - bottom trawling
- and we are campaigning to stop this destruction before it is too late.
This is truly the last undiscovered wilderness left on the planet.

The Antarctic and Southern Ocean
Coalition (ASOC)
http://www.asoc.org
The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition's
(ASOC's) Southern Ocean Fisheries Campaign works on five continents
to stop the Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing
that is dramatically depleting toothfish stocks - the most
important commercial fish in the Southern Ocean. At the same
time, the long-liners are killing thousands of endangered
albatrosses and other seabirds each year.
ASOC is also very concerned about the ecological impacts that the action
of bottom trawlers may be having in the area, particularly on fragile and
unique ecosystems such as sea mounts, which are present in the Southern
Ocean. Bottom trawlers scour the bottoms and destroy all marine life present
in their paths, not only the target species.

Hinchinbrook Island and other marine and coastal icons.
In Australia's unique southern seas, home to the feeding
grounds of the critically endangered blue whale, ACF
is currently working to ensure that each marine habitat
is given sufficient protection in marine national parks.
Our proposed National Oceans Act would see the waters
outside these parks being managed sustainably.
ACF is working to broaden its campaign commitment to
marine and coastal conservation and increase community
awareness about our remarkable oceans and how to best
protect them. As well as our ongoing efforts on marine
national parks, oceans legislative reform and regional
marine planning, we will also increase our efforts
for high seas protection, in the face of overfishing,
marine pollution, inappropriate coastal development,
introduced marine pests and threats associated with
the oil and gas industry.

David Suzuki Foundation
http://www.davidsuzuki.org
The David Suzuki Foundation works through science and education to protect the diversity of nature and our quality of life, now and for the future.
Since 1990, the David Suzuki Foundation has worked to find ways for society to live in balance with the natural world that sustains us.
Focusing on four program areas — oceans and sustainable fishing, forests and wild lands, climate change and clean energy, and the web of life — the Foundation uses science and education to promote solutions that help conserve nature.
Our work on oceans issues includes building public awareness about the state of ocean ecosystems and fish stocks and promoting changes in consumer behaviour to decrease the consumption of marine species that are not managed sustainably or that are caught through methods that damage ocean habitat. We are also working to reform Canadian fisheries policies.

DEEPWAVE
http://www.deepwave.org
The earth is a planet of water:
60 percent of the surface belongs to the high and deep
seas. This ecosystem is the largest realm on earth
for millions of plants and animals, a major actor in
the dynamics of the global climate. It is also a rich
resource for the growing demands of the world's increasing
population. But the oceans are daily under strong attack:
pollution and mismanagement of marine resources threaten
the fragile balance of this unique biotope.
Only with united conservation efforts
at national and international level can this environmental
degradation of the high seas be stopped.
DEEPWAVE was founded in the spring
of 2003 in order to develop and enforce environmental
tools to protect the ecosystem of the high and deep seas.
Our aims are to:
- enhance awareness of threats to
the marine environment
- pressure political parties to develop further solutions to these threats
- promotes scientific research and its dissemination
- provide an organisational framework for information and opinions on
marine conservation issues.

Ecology Action Centre
http://www.ecologyaction.ca
The discovery of deep sea corals,
hot smokers, and other fantastic underwater features is
transforming society s understanding of the ocean floor.
No longer do we consider the seafloor devoid of life and
structure. Scientists are determining that many fish species
rely on the ocean floor and are recommending to fishery
managers that they minimize the impacts of trawling.
In Canada we had some of the richest fishing grounds in the world. Today
most are closed due to overfishing and destructive trawling, and many stocks
show no sign of recovery more than a decade later. The time to protect
high seas habitat from destructive trawling is now.
For 15 years we have been fighting to protect ocean habitat from destructive
fishing practices. In 2000 we organized the First International Symposium
on Deep Sea Corals. Today, we promote conservation and sustainable fishing
practices through research and education.
On our website you will find documents describing the impacts of trawling
(or dragging as we call it in Atlantic Canada) including a bibliography
of scientific documents. The Proceedings of the First International Symposium
on Deep Sea Corals are available from the Centre.

Living Oceans Society
http://www.livingoceans.org/index.shtml
We strongly endorse the Position
Statement of this coalition to the UN General Assembly,
to declare an immediate moratorium on high seas bottom
trawling. The network of seamounts and hydrothermal vents
stretching around the Pacific Rim are known to be teeming
with fish and invertebrates supported by fragile & complex
habitats, yet outside the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic
Zone there exists an unregulated and unmonitored deep sea
bottom trawling fleet. The evidence linking healthy benthic
habitat to healthy fish stocks is undeniable, as is the
connection between habitat loss and bottom trawling.
Living Oceans Society is a marine conservation organization
based in the fishing village of Sointula, British Columbia.
We support the principles of ecosystem-based management,
working towards healthy oceans and healthy coastal communities.

MarBrasil
http://www.marbrasil.org
MarBrasil is a Brazilian non-governmental organization that seeks the conservation and preservation of the marine environment and the sustainable development of the Brazilian coastal area.
Intensive bottom trawling since the 70s has been the main cause for the progressive depletion of fish stocks in coastal areas of Paran state, affecting at least 1.500 small-scale fishermen along the 80 km coastline. The difficulties faced by these communities have increased as resources have decreased, causing unemployment, poverty and social exclusion.
One of MarBrasil's programmes - the Programme of Extension and Support to Fishing and Aquaculture (PREAMAR) works to solve these conflicts by integrating different projects including training and courses to introduce new technologies for fisheries management of the fishing industry.

Further to a study into the habitat
of whales off the Uruguayan coast (1995-1999 Organización
Conservación de Cetáceos (Organization
for the Conservation of Cetaceans) was set up in 2000.
Since then, in addition to research, the organisation's
main objectives include education and marine conservation,
integrating natural, socio-cultural and economic aspects.
In relation to the latter, sustainable tourism (whalewatching)
enables Uruguay's coastal communities to contribute
directly in the creation of the protected marine areas
for whales in Uruguayan waters.

Orissa Marine Resource Conservation
Consortium (OMRCC)
http://www.omrcc.org
Orissa Marine Resource Conservation Consortium promotes and facilitates collaborative sea turtle and fishery resource conservation in Orissa. We explore alternate livelihood options for the fisher folk to gear up community-based conservation and sustainable fisheries in Orissa.
OMRCC advocates against polluting activities and environmentally unsustainable development practices in the coastal areas of Orissa by educating different stakeholders including government agencies to reduce and prevent the over-exploitation of Orissa's marine resources. We also develop conflict management mechanisms for sea turtle conservation, sustainable fisheries and food security of traditional fishers.

PRETOMA is a Non Profit Civil Association,
with headquarters in San Jose, Costa Rica. We are biologists,
naturalists, conservationists, and citizens concerned over
the plight of the sea turtles and the marine habitat in general.
Our mission is to protect, conserve, and restore, the populations of sea
turtles that use the marine environment of Costa Rica to either nest, feed,
or migrate. We also work to protect the diverse habitats along the Central
American isthmus and international waters upon which they depend during
their different life stages.
We strive to work directly with the social groups that interact with the
sea turtles, such as coastal communities and fishermen, respecting their
cultural and economic needs.
