The coalition is made up of over seventy non-governmental organizations (NGOs), fishers organizations and law and policy institutes, all committed to protecting the deep sea.
A coordination team works together with a Steering Group that currently consists of the Ecology Action Centre, Greenpeace International, Marine Conservation Biology Institute, Natural Resources Defense Council, Pew Environment Group and Seas at Risk. The DSCC has developed a formidable international team of scientists, policy and communication experts, lawyers and political activists who on behalf of the deep sea have established a strong reputation and profile on the issue at the UN and in other fora.

Ecology Action Centre The discovery of deep sea corals, hot smokers, and other fantastic underwater features is transforming society s understanding of the ocean floor. No longer do we consider the seafloor devoid of life and structure. Scientists are determining that many fish species rely on the ocean floor and are recommending to fishery managers that they minimize the impacts of trawling. In Canada we had some of the richest fishing grounds in the world. Today most are closed due to overfishing and destructive trawling, and many stocks show no sign of recovery more than a decade later. The time to protect high seas habitat from destructive trawling is now. For 15 years we have been fighting to protect ocean habitat from destructive fishing practices. In 2000 we organized the First International Symposium on Deep Sea Corals. Today, we promote conservation and sustainable fishing practices through research and education. On our website you will find documents describing the impacts of trawling (or dragging as we call it in Atlantic Canada) including a bibliography of scientific documents. The Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Deep Sea Corals are available from the Centre. |

Greenpeace Greenpeace is a non-profit organization, with a presence in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific. Greenpeace speaks for 2.8 million supporters worldwide, and encourages many millions more to take action every day. As a global organization, Greenpeace focuses on the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet's biodiversity and environment, exposing environmental criminals, and challenging government and corporations when they fail to live up to their mandate to safeguard our environment and our future. Ancient forests are in danger... deep under the ocean. Biologists estimate that somewhere between 500,000 and 5,000,000 marine species have yet to be discovered. But these very species are in serious danger from the world's most destructive fishing practice - bottom trawling - and we are campaigning to stop this destruction before it is too late. This is truly the last undiscovered wilderness left on the planet. Find out more about deep sea life and what you can do to help save it. Or contact your local Greenpeace office. |

Seas At Risk Seas At Risk is an independent non-governmental federation of national and international environmental organisations concerned with the protection and restoration of the marine environment, specifically the waters of the North and Irish Seas and the wider North East Atlantic. Its participant organisations are primarily nationally based, although some are international groups, and it acts principally as a technical and political platform for environment group intervention at international political and legal meetings of government. Seas At Risk is currently campaigning to effect international political change on issues as diverse as overfishing and fishing-related damage to the marine environment, pollution from shipping, the harmful effects of offshore oil & gas exploration and exploitation, species & habitat protection, and the introduction of hazardous substances into the marine environment. |

The Antarctic and Southern Ocean
Coalition (ASOC) The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition's (ASOC's) Southern Ocean Fisheries Campaign works on five continents to stop the Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing that is dramatically depleting toothfish stocks - the most important commercial fish in the Southern Ocean. At the same time, the long-liners are killing thousands of endangered albatrosses and other seabirds each year. ASOC is also very concerned about the ecological impacts that the action of bottom trawlers may be having in the area, particularly on fragile and unique ecosystems such as sea mounts, which are present in the Southern Ocean. Bottom trawlers scour the bottoms and destroy all marine life present in their paths, not only the target species. |

The Biological Conservation Research Foundation (BICREF) After involving volunteers in the Maltese cetacean research project launched in 1996, Dr. Vella founded BICREF in 1998 to promote conservation research and awareness for effective action. BICREF is conducting research into biodiversity and the impacts of fishing/aquaculture in the Mediterranean around Malta. The Cetacean Conservation Research Project has already produced scientific results presented at local and international conferences. The increasing knowledge provided by valuable scientific data may pave the way to more accurate local awareness and conservation management of legally protected species/habitats, such as dolphins and the sea life that sustains them. |

BLOOM Association Created in 2004 by Claire Nouvian, BLOOM is a non-profit organization whose mission it is to protect the oceans by educating the public about environmental problems, by taking field actions which make a tangible difference, and by lobbying at high political level to catalyze policy change. BLOOM Association has developed its own particular method of informing the public, companies, institutions and leaders about the fragility of oceanic and deepwater environments and the need to protect them. Starting from the postulate that we only protect what we know and love, BLOOM Association seeks to create ties of affection between the public and the "invisible" marine environment, viewing emotion as the indispensable preamble to protection. By reconnecting adults and children everywhere with nature, with the irreplaceable emotions and beauty it bestows, BLOOM aspires to raising the global level of awareness about our interactions with the oceans. |

Living Oceans Society We strongly endorse the Position Statement of this coalition to the UN General Assembly, to declare an immediate moratorium on high seas bottom trawling. The network of seamounts and hydrothermal vents stretching around the Pacific Rim are known to be teeming with fish and invertebrates supported by fragile & complex habitats, yet outside the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone there exists an unregulated and unmonitored deep sea bottom trawling fleet. The evidence linking healthy benthic habitat to healthy fish stocks is undeniable, as is the connection between habitat loss and bottom trawling. Living Oceans Society is a marine conservation organization based in the fishing village of Sointula, British Columbia. We support the principles of ecosystem-based management, working towards healthy oceans and healthy coastal communities. Our Sustainable Fisheries research can be found on our web link. |

MarBrasil MarBrasil is a Brazilian non-governmental organization that seeks the conservation and preservation of the marine environment and the sustainable development of the Brazilian coastal area. Intensive bottom trawling since the 70s has been the main cause for the progressive depletion of fish stocks in coastal areas of Paran state, affecting at least 1.500 small-scale fishermen along the 80 km coastline. The difficulties faced by these communities have increased as resources have decreased, causing unemployment, poverty and social exclusion. One of MarBrasil's programmes - the Programme of Extension and Support to Fishing and Aquaculture (PREAMAR) works to solve these conflicts by integrating different projects including training and courses to introduce new technologies for fisheries management of the fishing industry. |

The TerraMar Project The TerraMar Project has created a tangible identity for the high seas, often referred to as international waters, which can be found outside of all nations jurisdiction. Citizenship provides you with a virtual platform to stand up for millions of marine animals, plants & habitats that have no voice. Together, we will defend the world's largest ecosystem. International waters cover 45% of our planet, that means 45% of the planet desperately needs your help. Our initial goal is to reach 1 MILLION citizens. Power lies in numbers, and with 1 MILLION citizens behind us we can start to make a difference. Applying for your free passport will help bring us one step closer to reaching our goals and bring you one step closer to saving the ocean. Sharing is caring with your help we can spread the word and increase citizenship to TerraMar making our shared international waters front page news, trending online and shared throughout the world! The more noise we make the more people will have to pay attention giving our international waters the attention they are due. Donations to The TerraMar Project support scientific research expeditions and building a vital education platform for the largest and least understood place on earth. TerraMar is comprised of a globally representative group of experts, NGOs and citizens whose mission is to protect the ocean for generations to come. We are members of the High Seas Alliance & the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition. |
