Marine scientists, conservationists and biodiversity experts in Australia, Canada and the UK have called on their governments to support a moratorium on bottom trawling in international waters.
This is the latest unprecedented action by scientists following on from the scientists' statement now signed by 1,452 of the world's leading deep ocean scientists from 69 countries calling for urgent action to protect fragile deep sea habitats from the devastating impact of high seas bottom trawling.
Moved by the failure of the international community to take such action, a number of the world's leading deep ocean
scientists toured Europe in 2005 to bring their concerns directly to decision makers.
The scientists underlined their call for an immediate UNGA moratorium on high seas bottom trawling as the only viable, short-term measure that can halt the destruction of these vulnerable deep-sea habitats - providing scientists with the time to study them and policy makers the space to adopt and implement longer-term measures for their protection.
