DEEP SEA LIFE

TED Online Talk: David Gallo: Underwater astonishments
David Gallo shows jaw-dropping footage of amazing sea creatures, including a shape-shifting cuttlefish, a pair of fighting squid, and a mesmerizing gallery of bioluminescent fish that light up the blackest depths of the ocean. Full Video

Deep Sea Coral

Find out more about Deep Sea Corals and the impact of bottom trawling on them in these videos from NOAA's website.
A further selection of videos are available from the NOAA Ocean Explorer website.
Pacific Deep Sea Corals
From the Bering Sea in Alaska to the southern tip of California, the Pacific Ocean seafloor coral and sponge habitat is threatened by collapse from irresponsible, destructive bottom trawling. Oceana's Pacific Deep Sea Corals website has a range of videos of deep sea life in the following regions:
Aleutian Islands
British Columbia
Gulf of Alaska

Deep Sea Creatures

Deep sea benthos: find out more about life at the bottom of the deep sea and how creatures adapt to the cold, dark and pressurised conditions of the ocean depths. For example, many species create their own light through bioluminescence, glowing lures and fluorescence.
Weird and wonderful creatures from the deep, Davidson Seamount, California, USA, 1500 m below the surface, (Greenpeace).

DEEP SEA DESTRUCTION

Exposed - Bottom Trawling in the North Atlantic & Tasman Sea
The North Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) might be one of the oldest fisheries management organisations in the world but it still can't control destructive fishing in its waters. During three weeks in the NAFO area in August 2005, Greenpeace witnessed mismanagement in the shrimp and Greenland halibut fisheries and dubious operators like the Estonian flagged Lootus IIlegally fishing in the area.

16 November, 2004: UN General Assembly - High Seas Bottom Trawling
To Continue Unchecked But The Tide Is Turning
In a historic first address by Greenpeace to the UN General Assembly and on behalf of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition, Karen Sack challenged world governments to safeguard the future of the oceans.

"The environmental NGOs on whose behalf this statement is being made, believe that there is enough knowledge for states to take immediate action to ensure a vibrant, sustainable and equitable future for all of our oceans. Don't let short-term needs sacrifice long-term viability. Take the opportunity of this anniversary to act, and meet the vision for clean and healthy oceans for now and for the future."
