Every year six million deep sea sharks are killed for squalene, including endangered species like the gulper shark and Portuguese dogfish.
The oil is put in moisturisers, conditioners and lipsticks. However manufacturers are under no obligation to state on the label when they use shark liver in their product,
Ms Cole said at the Telegraph Hay Festival yesterday that she had had not been aware that sharks were a key ingredient in cosmetics, and that it was “crazy” that use of squalene derived from them was not required to be labelled by law.
“When people are made aware of this and understand the issue the can then make informed choices.” she said. “and markets always follow consumers. ”
